A video-based analysis of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition, from its 200MP variable telephoto and tactile camera ring to the compromises that matter.
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition is a smartphone built around the pleasure of taking photographs. In the supplied video, the reviewer argues that its most distinctive achievement is not necessarily producing the best image in every situation. Instead, it makes shooting feel more like using a dedicated camera. That distinction defines both the phone's appeal and its compromises.
This is Belliste's analysis of the linked hands-on review, not an independent device test. The video specifically features the Leica Edition. Its rotating camera ring, accessories and some regional specifications should not automatically be attributed to every version of the regular Xiaomi 17 Ultra.
The Leica Edition shown in the video has a cream-colored, two-tone back with contrasting smooth and textured areas. Its substantial circular camera assembly, horizontal branding and knurled detailing make the design feel deliberately camera-oriented. The reviewer also praises the tactile buttons, including circular volume controls, and considers the appearance more distinctive than other recent Xiaomi flagships.
The packaging reinforces the same idea. The reviewer demonstrates a magnetic case, aluminum lens cap, microfiber cleaning cloth and wrist strap. These accessories are not merely decorative: they make the phone easier to treat as a camera you take out specifically to shoot. One omission stands out, however. Despite all this attention to handling, there is no conventional dedicated landscape shutter button in the position the reviewer would prefer.
The main camera uses a 50MP one-inch-type sensor with an f/1.67 aperture. Alongside it is a 50MP ultrawide with a 14mm-equivalent perspective and f/2.2 aperture. The most unusual lens is a 200MP telephoto with mechanically adjustable optics spanning approximately 75mm to 100mm equivalent focal lengths, at apertures from f/2.39 to f/2.96.
That telephoto specification needs careful interpretation. It provides continuous optical adjustment within a relatively narrow range, approximately 3.2x to 4.3x in the reviewer's description. It does not mean that every higher zoom setting on the screen is optical. The 200MP sensor does, however, give the camera useful resolution for cropping beyond the native focal lengths.
The reviewer finds autofocus quick and dependable, with plenty of detail and attractive subject separation from the large main sensor. He also considers the ultrawide genuinely useful rather than an afterthought. But he notices Xiaomi's familiar tendency to brighten skin tones and explicitly declines to call the system the undisputed image-quality champion. His strongest praise is for the experience of making pictures.
The camera app includes Leica Vibrant and Leica Authentic color profiles. The reviewer generally chooses Vibrant for everyday photos, but he is especially drawn to the more characterful Leica Essential modes. An M9-inspired look changes contrast, color and white-balance behavior, while a monochrome mode aims for a classic Leica black-and-white aesthetic with distinctive grain and tonality.
According to the video, these looks are integrated into capture rather than applied as simple reversible filters afterward. They do not transform the phone into an actual Leica rangefinder, and the reviewer acknowledges that the resulting images are not always the most technically polished. Their appeal lies in encouraging experimentation. Instead of asking only whether a photo is sharp, the user starts thinking about how the scene should look.
The Leica Edition's most memorable hardware feature is the metal ring surrounding the camera assembly. It rotates physically, while haptic feedback simulates defined clicks. A quick twist can launch the camera; within the app, the ring can control zoom or, in video mode, exposure compensation. The reviewer also demonstrates customization options for functions such as manual focus, shutter speed and white balance in supported modes.
It is an unusually flexible alternative to touchscreen controls. Yet the same ring creates problems during real shooting. Fingers can enter the frame when zooming, especially with the ultrawide lens, and casual handling can trigger the camera unintentionally. The reviewer likes the tactile concept but sometimes finds it less convenient than simply using the screen. The feature rewards experimentation rather than guaranteeing faster operation.
For point-and-shoot photography, the reviewer reports an enjoyable experience with responsive autofocus and attractive results. He also says he filmed much of a separate automotive review using this phone and was pleased with its 8K footage. That is a meaningful practical example, although it is not a controlled comparison against other flagship cameras.
The microphones were less impressive in that production. He used an external microphone to obtain the sound he wanted, a reminder that excellent video resolution does not automatically mean excellent recorded audio. The video also highlights specialized high-frame-rate recording, but buyers should check the exact mode limitations before treating a headline frame rate as a normal full-quality video setting.
The video identifies a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage. It also describes a flat 6.9-inch, 120Hz display with claimed peak brightness up to 3,500 nits. These are flagship-level specifications, though the reviewer does not present a controlled benchmark comparison or extended thermal testing.
For the edition shown, the reviewer cites a 6,800mAh silicon-carbon battery, 90W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, IP69 protection and HyperOS 3 based on Android 16. Those figures should be checked against the exact regional model offered for sale. The video does not establish measured battery endurance, so capacity alone should not be presented as proof of exceptional runtime.
Beyond the ring's ergonomics, the optical zoom range is less expansive than the mechanical design might suggest. The reviewer notes that moving between roughly 75mm and 100mm does not radically change composition. The engineering is interesting, but the practical advantage depends on the scene and the photographer's needs.
He also finds that the camera app forgets his full-resolution capture preference. After switching from a pixel-binned mode to higher-resolution photography, closing and reopening the app returns to the lower-resolution default. That behavior may conserve storage for mainstream users, but it frustrates someone who expects dedicated-camera-like control. For a device marketed around deliberate photography, remembering shooting preferences would be a meaningful improvement.
The review is specifically about the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition, not a side-by-side comparison of every Xiaomi 17 Ultra variant. The ring, Leica-themed accessories and camera-oriented presentation are central to the reviewer's judgment. Buyers of the standard version should confirm exactly which hardware controls and accessories are included, along with battery capacity, charging support and local availability.
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition succeeds by making smartphone photography feel engaging. Its large main sensor, 200MP adjustable telephoto, wide ultrawide, Leica looks and customizable ring give enthusiasts reasons to spend more time behind the lens. The reviewer finds it one of the most enjoyable camera-phone experiences he has had, without claiming it wins every image-quality comparison.
The compromises are equally real: accidental ring activation, fingers entering shots, a relatively limited continuous optical range, reset camera settings and underwhelming microphone performance in the reviewer's video workflow. For buyers who simply want a convenient premium phone, these quirks may outweigh the novelty. For photographers who enjoy making deliberate choices, they are the trade-offs of a more distinctive camera-first design.
