The first week of October 2026 brought a wave of new AI models across reasoning, coding, images and speech.

The first week of October 2026 brought a wave of new AI models. This guide covers the most important launches, who released them, and why they matter.
Mistral AI launched the public preview of Mistral Large 4 on October 6. The multimodal Mixture-of-Experts model has about 1.05 trillion total parameters and targets coding, agentic workflows and multimodal understanding. The API preview is available now; Mistral says the model weights are scheduled for release later in October. That means it should not yet be described as downloadable open weights at publication time.
Why it matters: when the weights arrive, organizations seeking deployment control, customization and data privacy will gain another major European option for self-hosted AI.
Google DeepMind published Nano Banana 2.1 on October 6. Google describes it as a Gemini 3-series multimodal model that understands text and images and generates image and text output. Google developer documentation lists text, image, video and PDF inputs, a 131,072-token input limit, and support for image generation, thinking and search grounding.

Reflection AI unveiled Beam on October 5. Beam is an open-weight, text-only Mixture-of-Experts model focused on reasoning, coding and agentic tasks. Reflection says it can compete with leading Chinese open models while requiring substantially less inference compute.
Microsoft AI launched MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming, MAI-Voice-2.1 and MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash on October 1. MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming provides real-time transcription across 60 languages with automatic continuous language detection. MAI-Voice-2.1 targets expressive text-to-speech, while Flash prioritizes low latency for conversational applications.

October 6 — Mistral Large 4 by Mistral AI: general, multimodal and agentic. October 6 — Nano Banana 2.1 by Google DeepMind: image and multimodal. October 5 — Beam by Reflection AI: coding, reasoning and agents. October 3 — GLM-5.3-Flash by Z.ai and Kolibri by Aleph Alpha. October 1 — MAI-Voice-2.1, MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash and MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming by Microsoft AI.
For self-hosting and deployment control, watch Mistral Large 4 when its weights are released. For image generation, Nano Banana 2.1 is a standout October launch. For coding agents, Beam is a notable new open-model entrant. For voice apps and real-time transcription, Microsoft’s MAI audio family is the most directly relevant release.
Mistral Large 4, Nano Banana 2.1, EmbeddingGemma 2 and Beam all launched between October 5 and 6, 2026.
It is open-weight, so you can download the weights, but check the license terms before commercial use.
