A practical Hailuo guide covering H3 and H3 Max, reference-led editing, native audio, actual API cost examples, and Ryan Morrison's historical Hailuo 02 project.
Hailuo AI is MiniMax's video creation platform. Its current H3 family can combine prompts and references to generate or revise short shots, with sound built into the workflow. The practical question is which model and input setup will get your shot right without consuming your budget in retakes.
This guide covers generation, editing, model differences, API costs, and lessons from a named creator's published project. Sources checked: October 9, 2026. This is a researched guide, not a Belliste hands-on test.
Start at Hailuo's official website for the creator interface, or use the MiniMax API documentation for integration. The platform name and model name are different: Hailuo is the workspace; MiniMax H3 is a generation model.
MiniMax announced H3 on July 31, 2026. Tutorials about Hailuo 02 or 2.3 describe earlier generations, so their audio and output limits should not be applied to H3.
The current developer guide distinguishes these models:
| Model | Output resolution | Duration | Practical starting point |
|---|---|---|---|
| MiniMax H3 | 768P or 2K | 4–15 seconds | Reference-led generation and editing |
| MiniMax H3 Max | 480P or 768P | 5–15 seconds | Faster generation and iteration |
H3 Max was jointly released with fal.ai and post-trained for speed. “Max” does not mean higher resolution. Verify the selected model ID and supported operation rather than choosing by its name.
Older Hailuo models may appear on host platforms. Compare their current endpoint specifications separately.
H3 supports text-to-video, first- and last-frame guidance, and reference generation using images, video, or audio. For a product shot, a clean image can anchor appearance; a movement reference can communicate the action you want.
For editing, give the source clip a clear role and describe the requested change. “Keep the presenter and camera movement; replace the background with a quiet studio” is easier to evaluate than “make this better.” Treat preservation of untouched details as something to check, not a guarantee.
The open-release documentation describes native stereo audio. Include ambience, effects, or dialogue in the brief, then listen critically before delivery.
The released H3 system generates a 768p base result and uses H3-Regenerate-2K to regenerate it at higher resolution using the original context. Calling the whole open pipeline a simple “native 2K model” hides that distinction.
The release also explains that its context-processing service and 2K regeneration module were not included in the initial open release. Downloadable weights do not automatically reproduce the complete hosted workflow.
In an August 2, 2025 Tom's Guide project, Ryan Morrison used Hailuo 02 to build an extinct-animal mini-documentary from 16 prompts, generating six-second 1080p clips. He reported two retakes, including a tiger changing appearance. He added sound separately and assembled the film in CapCut.
That is a historical 02 example, not an H3 benchmark. Our takeaway: review identity throughout a shot, and budget for assembly beyond generation.
Check the signed-in Hailuo interface for current subscription offers, trial credits, watermark rules, and included models. We could not establish a stable public app-plan price from the pages checked, so this guide does not promise a fixed free allowance or monthly subscription rate.
For developers, the official MiniMax pricing page lists these H3 output rates:
| Output | Price per second | 10-second output |
|---|---|---|
| 768P | $0.08 | $0.80 |
| 2K | $0.13 | $1.30 |
These are output-only examples, before applicable input charges. Audio input is free; the first five image references are free, with $0.04 per additional image. Video references are billed by input duration at the selected output-resolution rate.
A ten-second 2K output with a ten-second video reference therefore totals $2.60 under those listed rates, before other applicable charges. Three such attempts cost $7.80. Judge cost per usable shot, not the cheapest advertised generation.
Regeneration has separate billing; do not assume the full-generation rate applies to it or to H3 Max.
Choose one shot, its purpose, duration, and frame shape. A product turn, a reaction, or a short establishing shot is a useful first test.
Confirm generation versus editing, audio support, resolution, and reference availability in your selected interface.
Use a sharp product or character image. Describe whether each additional asset supplies appearance, movement, sound, or the footage to edit. Remove conflicting or irrelevant material.
Use Subject + Action + Setting + Camera + Light + Audio + Constraints.
Original example: “A ceramic mug rests on a café table. Steam rises gently as the camera slowly pushes closer. Soft morning window light. Quiet room ambience and a distant spoon clink. Keep the mug shape and glaze unchanged; no dialogue.”
Check the opening, middle, and ending frames. Watch for changes in identity, contact with surfaces, product geometry, and background continuity. Listen for unwanted speech or abrupt sound changes.
Simplify the action, adjust the camera request, or improve the reference. Save the settings alongside each result so your revisions have a clear purpose.
Trim clips, balance audio, add approved typography, and export in a production editor. For repeated jobs, the API uses an asynchronous create-task, status-check, and download workflow.
Hailuo is worth evaluating for product motion, short ads, visual concepts, and reference-led scenes. A finished campaign still needs continuity, accurate branding, sound review, and editing.
Do not treat plausible-looking movement as proof of physical accuracy. Inspect hands, reflections, collisions, faces, and visible text. For factual explainers, label synthetic scenes rather than presenting them as documentary evidence.
H3 uses the MiniMax H3 Community License, rather than Apache 2.0. It includes territorial restrictions affecting the EU, UK, South Korea, and US, and requires separate authorization for commercial products and services generating more than $20 million in yearly revenue. Read the complete current terms before deployment.
Hosted app and API use also require checking the applicable service terms. Use reference assets and voices you have rights to use.
Hailuo's value is easier to assess through one planned shot than through a list of superlatives. Start with a clear subject, one action, and references that each have a purpose. Compare the result, retake count, and total cost against another tool on the same brief.
Choose H3 when its reference and editing workflow suits the job; test H3 Max when faster iteration matters. Keep the model distinction, sound review, and finishing work in your production plan.
Hailuo AI is MiniMax's video creation platform. Model capabilities depend on the engine selected in the interface or API.
The current developer guide lists H3 at 768P or 2K for 4–15-second output. H3 Max prioritizes speed and supports 480P or 768P for 5–15 seconds.
H3 generates native stereo audio. Review dialogue, ambience, and synchronization before publishing.
H3 supports video editing and reference-led creation. Check your interface for the specific operation and review whether the requested unchanged details were preserved.
Check the current Hailuo interface for trial credits and plan conditions. This guide does not confirm a fixed free allowance or subscription price.
The official pricing page checked October 9, 2026 lists H3 output at $0.08 per second for 768P and $0.13 for 2K. Applicable reference-input charges and retries add to the total.
The initial open release did not include the hosted context-processing and 2K regeneration modules. The base generation and full hosted workflow are different.
Review the MiniMax H3 Community License and applicable service terms. The license includes territorial restrictions and separate authorization above its $20 million yearly-revenue threshold.
