Learn how to use DeepSeek for chat, coding, research, and documents, with V4.1-Flash, API pricing, open weights, and privacy explained.
DeepSeek is a practical starting point if you want an AI assistant for explanations, writing, coding, and document work without beginning with a paid chat subscription. Developers can also access its models through a usage-based API or work with downloadable weights.
The important distinction is between those routes. Free chat, a hosted API, and a self-hosted model have different costs, controls, and privacy implications. This guide explains how to choose among them and use DeepSeek effectively.
Documentation and pricing checked October 9, 2026. Belliste has not conducted an original hands-on benchmark for this guide. The independent review below is attributed to its author and publication date.
DeepSeek develops its own language models and provides a consumer assistant, developer services, and open-weight releases.
For most readers, the easiest entry is DeepSeek Chat or the official iOS and Android apps linked from its download page. The company describes its mobile assistant as free.
The same download page now includes DeepSeek Harness for desktop, which can work with local files and longer tasks. Treat this as a separate agent workflow, rather than assuming every desktop capability exists in ordinary web chat.
DeepSeek introduced V4.1-Flash on September 10, 2026, adding native visual understanding alongside its text capabilities.
For developers, the current canonical Flash identifier is `deepseek-flash`. Older V4 Flash identifiers may still be accepted for compatibility while routing to the newer model. That makes model names worth checking before reproducing an old tutorial.
The current pricing table also lists V4 Pro, despite an earlier announcement describing a planned migration away from it. Use the live documentation when deciding what to deploy; a launch announcement is not a permanent service contract.
DeepSeek's V4 announcement introduced million-token context and thinking/non-thinking modes. A large model context can help with long material, but it does not guarantee perfect recall or an identical upload allowance in every app.
| Task | A useful brief | How to review it |
|---|---|---|
| Explanations | Teach a concept at a specified level | Check definitions and examples |
| Writing | Revise a draft for an audience and purpose | Preserve meaning and verify claims |
| Coding | Implement a small, clearly defined change | Run tests and inspect the diff |
| Reasoning | Compare options under stated constraints | Challenge assumptions and recalculate |
| Document analysis | Answer questions from an uploaded report | Check supporting sections |
| Current research | Search for recent information | Open sources and inspect dates |
The official app introduction describes web search, a thinking mode, and file upload with text extraction. It is an older introduction; use your current interface to confirm today's controls.
A simple rewrite does not need the same workflow as a difficult programming or mathematical problem. Use a faster, non-thinking option where available for straightforward work, and thinking mode for tasks requiring several dependent decisions.
Then evaluate the result. A longer explanation can contain a wrong assumption just as easily as a short answer. For calculations, request the formula and units. For code, provide the expected behavior and a failing example.
In the API, follow the current mode configuration documentation instead of assuming an old reasoning-model name is still the correct endpoint.
The official consumer app is free to start using. API access is a separate paid service, and running open weights requires computing resources.
“Free chat” should not be read as a promise of uninterrupted capacity, unlimited uploads, or every feature a rival paid assistant provides. Check the account's actual behavior and service status before building a time-sensitive workflow around it.
Download through official links. A third-party app using the DeepSeek name can have its own subscription and data practices.
USD per one million tokens, from the official pricing table, checked October 9, 2026:
| Model | Input: cache hit, off-peak / peak | Input: cache miss, off-peak / peak | Output, off-peak / peak |
|---|---|---|---|
| V4.1-Flash | $0.003 / $0.006 | $0.15 / $0.30 | $0.60 / $1.20 |
| V4 Pro | $0.022 / $0.044 | $0.66 / $1.32 | $1.98 / $3.96 |
Peak hours are 01:00–04:00 and 06:00–10:00 UTC, Monday–Friday, excluding Chinese public holidays. Other hours are off-peak.
Do not price an entire prompt at the cache-hit rate unless it actually qualifies. A hypothetical Flash request with 10,000 uncached input tokens and 2,000 output tokens costs $0.0054 at peak rates, before other applicable usage. This is an arithmetic example, not a measured typical request.
Check live prices before budgeting.
In his July 13, 2026 TechRadar review, Ritoban Mukherjee described testing DeepSeek's chat and API on code generation, summaries, reasoning, and general questions.
He reported well-structured code and accurate long-document summaries, but also vague or deflective answers on politically sensitive prompts. He found fewer memory and personalization features than in some competing assistants.
These are observations from that review period, not a controlled comparison of today's V4.1-Flash. Its pricing and multimodal descriptions predate later changes, so this guide uses current official documentation for those facts.
The useful takeaway is to evaluate both successful tasks and the questions the assistant handles incompletely.
Choose something you can judge: revise an email, explain a familiar topic, debug a small script, or summarize a non-confidential report.
Specify the audience, length, constraints, and format. “Give me a 200-word brief with three supporting references” is easier to assess than “research this.”
Enable search when current information matters. For document work, explicitly request answers based only on the supplied file.
Use a quick mode for simple transformations and thinking mode for multi-step work, when those controls are available.
Check missing requirements, invented details, unsupported conclusions, and numerical errors. Ask for revisions targeted at the problem you found.
Test code, inspect original citations, and compare summaries against the source document. Keep the final output separate from unverified brainstorming.
Task + Context + Inputs + Constraints + Output format + Verification rules
> Review this Python function for the intermittent failure described below. Preserve its public interface, explain the likely cause, propose the smallest change, and provide a test that reproduces the bug. Do not invent dependencies or claim you ran the code.
For documents:
> Use only the attached quarterly report. Summarize revenue and cost changes, identify the supporting section for each claim, and show the calculations. Mark information the report does not provide.
For current research:
> Compare these three tools using current official documentation first. Include dated links, separate confirmed features from previews, and flag conflicting prices rather than averaging them.
V4.1-Flash has native visual understanding, according to its official release and model card. Do not repeat older reviews claiming the whole DeepSeek ecosystem is text-only.
Model capability and app availability are separate questions. Confirm the selected endpoint or interface accepts the input you need. Reading an image is also different from generating one; visual understanding does not by itself establish a built-in image generator.
The official V4.1-Flash model card lists an MIT license and describes a 552B-parameter mixture-of-experts model. A small active-parameter count does not mean the full model fits on an ordinary laptop.
Self-hosting can give teams more control over infrastructure and data flow, but someone still pays for hardware, storage, deployment, and maintenance. Smaller distilled models are separate checkpoints with different capabilities.
Before choosing local deployment, test the exact checkpoint, license, memory requirements, and workflow. Running a small derivative locally is not equivalent to the hosted flagship.
The DSeek privacy policy published for the UK, updated March 27, 2026, describes collecting user inputs and using data to train and improve technology. It states that personal data is processed and stored in China.
It lists a training opt-out right and directs privacy requests to privacy@deepseek.com, subject to location and applicable conditions. Consult the policy linked by your own service; do not assume every region has identical controls.
API payment alone should not be interpreted as an enterprise no-training guarantee. Self-hosting can change the data path, but only if the complete deployment avoids sending assets to external services.
DeepSeek Harness has its own policy. Review it separately when using that product or third-party tools connected to it.
Consider DeepSeek when its free chat or developer model options fit your work. Compare assistants on tasks you can verify rather than treating a low token price as a complete product comparison.
Include source quality, file handling, consistency, correction effort, integrations, and privacy requirements. If a task takes several retries, cost per successful result matters more than cost per initial response.
DeepSeek provides an accessible consumer assistant and a flexible developer ecosystem. Its evolving model lineup makes current documentation especially important: V4.1-Flash brings vision, API identifiers can redirect, and peak/off-peak pricing changes the economics.
Start with a non-sensitive task, review the output carefully, and choose hosted or local deployment based on your actual requirements. Try DeepSeek Chat or explore its developer documentation.
DeepSeek develops language models and offers a consumer AI assistant, a developer API, and open-weight releases for supported deployment workflows.
Its official consumer app is free. API usage is paid separately, and self-hosting requires computing resources. Free access is not a guarantee of uninterrupted capacity or unlimited uploads.
Released September 10, 2026, V4.1-Flash is a newer DeepSeek model with native visual understanding. Its canonical API identifier is deepseek-flash.
V4.1-Flash supports visual understanding. Confirm that your chosen app or endpoint accepts images; understanding an image does not imply image-generation support.
Non-thinking mode suits quick transformations and straightforward answers. Thinking mode can help with multi-step problems, but its longer reasoning does not guarantee correctness.
API charges depend on model, input and output tokens, cache status, and peak or off-peak timing. Use the current official pricing table rather than older promotional rates.
Supported open-weight checkpoints can be self-hosted. Hardware needs vary substantially, and the full V4.1-Flash model is not equivalent to a small laptop-friendly distilled model.
Review the policy for your service and region. The UK-published DSeek policy describes training-related data use and processing in China, with privacy requests directed to privacy@deepseek.com subject to applicable conditions.
