ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both start at $20 a month. Compare their tools, higher plans, privacy and payment options to decide which fits your work.
A $20 AI subscription earns its place by helping you finish work. Its value shrinks when you spend that time repairing the answers.
ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro share the same monthly starting price. The difference is what you need them to finish: a revised article, a working code change, an analysis of a file or an image for your next campaign.
For varied everyday work, Belliste recommends starting with ChatGPT Plus. For a workload dominated by writing and editing, Claude Pro deserves the first look. Developers should compare Claude Code and Codex on an existing project before choosing.
This is a research-based buying guide informed by Zapier and Tom’s Guide, with plan details checked against official documentation. Belliste did not conduct the hands-on tests cited below.

Zapier’s comparison favours Claude as a creative and editing partner. That makes it a strong candidate for people who spend much of their day revising reports, proposals and articles.
For an editor, the most revealing assignment is an imperfect draft with a specific brief: cut 20%, retain the qualifications and remove unsupported claims. The assistant that needs fewer substantive corrections is the better purchase.
Claude is our first recommendation for this workload, rather than an automatic winner in every writing task. Your preferred tone and the material you provide can change the result.
ChatGPT Plus combines image generation with file analysis, voice and research tools. That combination is useful when your work moves between formats.
A shop owner might analyse a sales file, draft a product description and generate a promotional image in the same service. For recurring tasks like these, ChatGPT’s breadth has practical value.
Anthropic’s image documentation draws an important distinction: Claude can analyse uploaded images and build diagrams or interactive visuals using HTML and SVG, but it does not generate photos or illustrations in the way an image generator does.
For original visual assets, ChatGPT is the clearer choice between these two. For a chart or small interactive explainer, Claude’s lack of a photo generator does not rule it out.
Zapier favours Claude Code in its development assessment and identifies Codex as OpenAI’s competing coding tool. This is a reason to consider Claude seriously, rather than evidence that every developer should switch.
Generating a calculator from scratch says little about fixing a bug inside an existing application.
Use one contained task from a repository you understand. Review whether the assistant found the cause, respected the existing structure and produced a change supported by appropriate checks. Watch for invented dependencies, unrelated edits and claims that tests passed without evidence.
For professional development, the deciding factor is how much supervision a correct, reviewable change requires.
Tom’s Guide’s October 15 face-off gave ChatGPT a 3–2 win against Claude Haiku 5.5 across five everyday prompts. Because it tested Haiku and a small prompt set, we do not use that score to rank Plus against the full Claude Pro subscription.
For research, both paid services offer tools to find and synthesise information. The verified feature lists alone do not establish a reliable quality winner. Our recommendation here is neutral: neither deserves your subscription solely because it produces a confident answer with references.
Both services have iOS and Android apps, so mobile access alone does not distinguish them. If most of your work happens on a phone, try the actual attachment, voice and editing flow before paying for a desktop feature you rarely use.
Both also offer memory. OpenAI describes ChatGPT’s memory as a way to reuse relevant preferences and context, with controls varying by plan, region and platform. Claude’s pricing page lists memory across conversations.
Memory reduces repeated explanations; it should not replace explicit project instructions and source files.
Do not assume a personal subscription automatically excludes your conversations from model training.
In ChatGPT, Data controls include an “Improve the model for everyone” setting. Turning it off prevents new conversations from being used for training, while leaving them in your history. OpenAI documents exceptions for conversations you submit as feedback.
Claude provides a model-improvement control under Privacy for consumer plans, including Pro and Max. Anthropic also describes separate safety-related uses of flagged conversations.
Neither control is a promise that content is never retained or processed. For client work, check your organisation’s requirements before uploading confidential material. Memory, training permission and deletion are separate questions.
A service being accessible does not guarantee that your card will complete a subscription payment.
OpenAI documents credit and debit cards for web subscriptions, with additional methods in selected markets. Claude’s billing guidance also lists credit and debit cards for web purchases. Subscriptions bought through their mobile apps are handled by Apple or Google.
For readers in Algeria and neighbouring countries, check the checkout currency and total, then ask your bank whether your card permits recurring international online payments. Do not infer acceptance of a local card from the service’s general availability. App-store billing also depends on the payment methods supported by your store account.
Compare the final charge, including conversion costs, rather than simply converting the advertised $20 price.

Plus and Pro are the focus here because they are the natural starting point for this $20 comparison. Heavy users can move to ChatGPT Pro at $100, $200 or $500 monthly, or Claude Max at $100 or $200. Upgrade for an allowance or capability your work actually needs.
Neither $20 plan is unlimited. Before upgrading, identify which limit interrupts you and whether the next plan addresses it.
Claude’s $200 annual Pro payment saves $40 against twelve monthly payments. Take that offer after deciding to stay, rather than using the discount as a reason to commit early.
If your use is occasional, remain on Free. If you need both services, give each a distinct recurring job before paying for two subscriptions.
ChatGPT Plus is our starting recommendation for people who need varied output, especially generated images alongside text and file work.
Claude Pro is our first candidate for frequent writing and editing, and a serious option for developers interested in Claude Code.
Judge the purchase by an ordinary working week: what you finished, what needed correcting and what stopped you.
Both list $20 per month on monthly billing. Claude Pro also offers a $200 annual payment, equivalent to $16.67 per month. Local prices and taxes can differ.
Claude can analyse images and create code-based diagrams and interactive visuals. Anthropic says it does not generate photos or illustrations in the way image-generation tools do. ChatGPT Plus includes image generation.
ChatGPT Pro lists $100, $200 and $500 monthly tiers. Claude Max lists $100 and $200 monthly options. Check current allowances before upgrading.
No. Both services provide model-improvement settings for personal accounts. Review those settings and their exceptions before sharing sensitive work.
Card acceptance is not guaranteed. Check the service’s regional eligibility and checkout options, and confirm with your bank that your card supports the required recurring international payment.
